Theme: Bridging the Gap: Amplifying Grassroots Voices for Quality, Inclusive, and Gender-Responsive Education in Tanzania.

Overview:

Are you a journalist passionate about the future of education and committed to promoting gender equality? Apply for the 2026 Education Journalism Fellowship, designed to support in-depth reporting on the challenges and innovations within Tanzania's education sector, with a focus on gender-responsive and inclusive education.

This fellowship seeks to empower journalists to produce impactful, community-driven stories that highlight the experiences of marginalized communities, including children, parents, teachers, and education advocates. Fellows will explore how gender shapes access to education, outcomes, and equity, bringing these crucial issues into national conversations. This work will foster actions to create a more inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive education system.

Eligibility Criteria:

We welcome applications from passionate early- to mid-career journalists who are committed to impactful storytelling and public interest reporting. Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Hold valid accreditation from the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB).
  • Have experience in print, broadcast, or digital media. Freelance journalists with a strong portfolio are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in reporting on education, gender equality, and social justice issues.
  • Be fluent in Swahili and/or English.
  • Show a particular interest in gender-related issues within the education sector.
  • Be affiliated with a recognized media outlet. Freelancers must provide evidence or assurance that their stories will be published or broadcast.
  • Be based in or actively reporting from one of the following regions: Tabora, Manyara, Dodoma, Tanga, Mtwara, or Kagera.

We strongly encourage applications from journalists who are passionate about amplifying underreported voices and driving meaningful social change through ethical and solutions-focused journalism.

How to Apply:

Interested applicants should submit the following:

  1. A Resume/CV (maximum 2 pages).
  2. A Portfolio: Links to three of your best published works (education-related pieces are a plus).
  3.  Copies of their accreditation IDs and a letter from their respective media outlets guaranteeing publication of their fellowship work.

Selection Process:

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a virtual interview. Fellows will be announced by 12th June, 2026.

Post-Fellowship Engagement:

Upon completion of the fellowship, all fellows will be invited to join the Education Journalism Fellowship Alumni Network. This network offers continued mentorship, professional development opportunities, and access to a community of like-minded journalists and education advocates.
